LIO MALCA PRESENTS:
KEITH HARING AT LA NAVE SALINAS IBIZA (SPAIN)

In 2017, La Nave Salinas dedicates a public exhibition to four works by Keith Haring. The show honors the prolific American artist and gives the island of Ibiza a unique opportunity to see his work in person.
THE EXHIBITION
Two works by Haring are exhibited within the interior space of La Nave: Pop Shop Tokyo, and Untitled (DV8) 1986. Adorning the outside of the space is a work entitled Channel Surf Club, Knokke, 1987. In addition, Lio Malca has temporarily installedan iconic Haring sculpture, Untitled (Headstand), placed in the city, for the enjoyment of all Ibizan people and their visitors.
Visitors are welcomed into the exhibition by the landmark sculpture, Channel Surf Club, Knokke, 1987, erected on a wooden platform outside of La Nave. Lio Malca specially acquired the sculpture less than a month before the exhibition was due to open.
Upon entering La Nave, the walls and ceiling have been completely covered by panels that evoke the imagery of the interior of the Tokyo Pop Shop. One wall on the left-hand side of the space displays the work, Untitled (DV8) 1986. The larger space of La Nave evokes imagery of a large-scale Tokyo Pop Shop, which then itself contains the original installation.
Tokyo Pop Shop (1988), is embedded into the center of the space so that the roof of the container rests at ground level. This allows the viewer to appreciate the drawings on the ceiling that might otherwise go unnoticed. The installation creates a lateral path that leads to the bottom of the room, where the viewer can access the stairs that descend to the Tokyo Pop Shop entrance.
Lio Malca and La Nave Salinas have worked in collaboration with the town hall of Ibiza, Art Projects Ibiza, and Heart, to display one of Haring’s most emblematic sculptures to the Island of Ibiza. Once the exhibition is over, the sculpture will be installed at the Marina Botafoch roundabout for the enjoyment of the Ibizan people and their visitors.
THE WORKS
Tokyo Pop Shop, 1988:
The idea of the Tokyo Pop Shop was born from the success of the New York Pop Shop that opened in 1986. The Pop Shop in New York became a key point of development for Haring’s artistic practice. His art became accessible to all in accordance with the universality and commodification of Pop Art. Locals could stop in and purchase t-shirts and other trinkets bearing images of his work, as well as other contemporary artists such as Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat. In late 1987, Haring traveled to Japan and acquired two 40-foot containers that would become the base of one of his largest-scale projects. He equipped the interiors with hand-painted wooden panels, creating an immersive experience for the viewer. In January 1988, Tokyo Pop Shop opened its doors to the capital of Japan with the intention of recreating the spirit of the New York Pop Shop, bringing art out of private institutions and into the hands of the public. After being missing for decades and despite a rigorous search, the containers were finally recovered and became part of Lio Malca’s collection in 2004.
Untitled (DV8), 1986:
This is a five-panel mural that was originally commissioned by Dr. Winkie, a friend of the artist and owner of the iconic Club DV8 in San Francisco. Numerous charity, cultural and social fundraising events took place in DV8 until the club closed in 1997, becoming an icon of the Bay Area social movement which defined the San Francisco nightlife at the time.
Channel Surf Club, Knokke, 1987:
On July 6, 1987, Keith Haring painted a mural on the outside of a large container he discovered on a beach in Knokke (Belgium). Channel Surf Club used the container to store surfboards and equipment until Haring painted the entire front with black and red paint over the course of a single day. The mural became a beloved landmark and symbol of the local surfer culture.

Music, dance, fashion, and art experienced a renaissance during the booming 1980s. Concepts within dance were especially pushed to their prior limits.
Haring was taken with the emerging art of breakdancing and incorporated these new movements into his work. This interest can be seen most prominently in a series of thirteen monumental sculptures created between 1985 and 1989. The sculptures would be temporarily displayed a decade later on Park Avenue, between 53rd and 74th streets, in Manhattan, New York. Untitled (Headstand) was one such sculpture.

Keith Haring (Pennsylvania, 1958) developed a love for drawing at a very young age. His father taught him the basics of cartooning, and in this early art-making practice, Haring found a passion that would sustain an iconic career.
Keith Haring was a socially conscious artist. Works such as his piece painted on the Berlin Wall indicates an active political spirit. Haring created his own foundation that continues to this day to fight for the well being of high-risk children and AIDS research. Haring died of complications of AIDS when he was just 31 years old.
